Learn Spanish With Food

No matter what Spanish speaking country you’re thinking of, there is no doubt that their citizens are proud of their culture and their cuisine. This is true whether you are thinking of Mexicans, with their delicious assortments of tacos, burritos, beans and rice and other less traditional fare, or the Spaniards, who love dishes like torta de patata (potato omelette) or the famous paella. You’re probably already familiar with these dishes, but there are many more to be discovered.

Even within a nation, the food varies greatly—for example, in Spain, seafood is a huge staple in Barcelona, one of the major port cities that faces out into the Mediterranean. If you enjoy preparing and eating exotic food then this is a fantastic way to learn Spanish. There are many cooking classes you can sign up for, either through local parks and rec programs, or through community colleges / adult education. You’ll make new friends with which to practice your language with; it’s a lot of fun. Craigslist can also be a source for finding these cooking groups.

And don’t think it’s going to cost a lot of money – it can be inexpensive and informal, such as each student taking turns hosting the class in his or her kitchen. Of course, if you prefer a more professional approach, you can always find a high end class offered through local cooking academies. The key is to make it fun!
